Alan Moore’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a fantastic comic mini-series. I know, I know – the 2003 movie “adaptation” left a bad taste in your mouth. Imagine how Sean Connery’s mouth tastes (er, I mean…). The source material, however, is top notch. Moore jams famous literary characters into one world and has them band together as the titular team.
Let’s pretend Steven Norrington’s 2003 bomb had never been filmed. Connery does it all the time. How should a faithful adaptation of The League be cast? Here’s Modern Geekery’s picks!
Mina Murray – Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge, The Invasion) can bring the quiet dignity required for Mina Murray, The Gentlemen’s lady with a past.
Allan Quartermain – Peter O’Toole

The Allan Quartermain character is not written as a virile older man as was played by Sean Connery, but as a past-his-prime adventurer. As “The Most Acclaimed Actor of His Generation*,” we would be foolish not to cast Peter O’Toole as our aging hero.
(* this was stated in the narraction to the Venus trailer, herego it must be true)
Hawley Griffin – Ralph Fiennes
Without people watching and judging his actions, Hawley Griffin (aka The Invisible Man) has degenerated into a self-serving, violent, sociopathic slimeball. Ralph Fiennes showed he could play over-the-top nuts convincingly in In Bruges.
Jekyll/Hyde – Dylan Baker & Vinnie Jones

What better way to portray the difference between the soft-spoken Jekyll and the savage Hyde than to cast two actors with completely different styles. We’ll let Dylan Baker (Spider-Man 2, The Stone Angel) make us care about the character and then watch Vinnie Jones (Snatch, The Condemned) chew up the scenery. Perhaps literally, in the case of Hyde.
Captain Nemo – Adrien Brody

Adrien Brody (King Kong, The Village) has the skills, experience and nose necessary to play Nemo, Science Pirate and Captain of the Nautilus.
Campion Bond – Oliver Platt

The right hand man of “M,” the League’s mysterious benefactor, can be brought to life by Oliver Platt (Kinsey, The Ice Harvest). Although I’m pretty sure we’ll have to work in a bow-tie into Campion’s wardrobe or he won’t do it. Seriously, how many characters has he played who wear bow-ties? Does he have it written in to his contracts?
August Dupin – Sir Ben Kingsley

Sir Ben Kingsley (Ghandi, The Wackness) will make a quick appearance as French Detective August Dupin.
Rosa Belinda Coote – Anjelica Houston

The Head Mistress of Rosa Coote’s Correctional Academy for Wayward Gentlewoman is perfect for Wes Anderson’s favourite mother figure, Angelica Houston (The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic).
Doctor Moriarty – Armin Shimerman

Gullivar Jones – Anthony Michael Hall

O.G. (Original Geek) Anthony Michael Hall (The Breakfast Club, The Dead Zone) would be Gullivar Jones, the first of two Mars-dwelling adventurers in the story.
John Carter – Bruce Campbell

Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, Bubba Ho-Tep) would be a shoe-in for John Carter, the more experienced and battle-weary of the two heroes on the red planet. “Good… Bad… I’m the guy on Mars.”
William Samson, Sr. – Philip Glenister

The irascible carriage driver of The League is a great fit for Philip Glenister (the only reason to watch BBC’s Life on Mars).
Alphonse Moreau – Martin Landau

Our last casting choice is Martin Landau (The Majestic, Ready to Rumble) as Moreau, the infamous doctor who makes really creepy animal/man hybrids.

haha, no geek movie is complete without our Brucie Boy ^_^
